LRT Palembang to Operate in June 2018, Five Stations Ready to Use

JAKARTA, – The progress of Light Rail Transit (LRT) development in Palembang has reached 76% and is ready to operate in June 2018. However, there will be only 5 out of 13 stations ready to operate and serve the passengers by then.

Nevertheless, when inspecting the construction site, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said he hoped all the stations would be able to operate simultaneously to provide maximum services to the people of South Sumatra.

“Hopefully all the 13 stations will operate simultaneously, but we will see whether it can be done or not,” said Minister Budi Karya while reviewing the development progress of LRT Palembang Zone I on Sunday night (12/10).

According to the minister, the current development progress of LRT Palembang has reached 76% but the installation of steel box girder has been finished 100%. Meantime the works for the railway has reached 50% of the total of 47 kilometers.

Once operating, the Transportation Ministry and PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) as the managing company will conduct an assessment to determine the passenger fare. Up to now the minister estimates the ticket would be Rp5,000 with the government’s subsidy.

Meanwhile Operations Director of PT Waskita Karya, Adi Wibowo, said there will be only 5 out of 13 stations to be operated during the upcoming Asian Games. This is because the 8 stations are still under construction and certainly will not completed during the Asian Games.

“There are 3 stations that will be ready for trials in March and obviously there will be only 5 stations that can be operated during the Asian Games and the rest of 8 stations will be finished after the event,” said Adi.

The 5 stations that will operate first during the Asian Games are the ones at the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport Palembang, the Palembang Icon Mall, the Cinde Market, the Jakabaring Stadium and the OPI Mall. (DTK/TPP)
